People and Cities

Living out in the wilderness of Oregon as I am, I often forget just how much photographic opportunity awaits one in the thriving, throbbing environment of a large city.

People forget themselves in those cities - completely unaware that they could be watched by a thousand pair of eyes at any moment. You find them lost in thought amidst a large, moving crowd, stealing moments of anonymity and solitude. You find love, sorrow, poverty, wealth, comedy and seriousness side by side - openly expressed.

So on my recent 3-day visit to the Austrian capital of Vienna, I spent half an hour, sitting in a busy shopping street, just watching.

This is for Luke:

What was she thinking about - examining this furcoat in the window? Of past days, when it was glamorous to wear fur? Of an old coat she used to own?

Men - always looking at the same thing ...

Leaned against the window of one of the cities poshest stores, a pregnant girl is begging coins from passerbyers. This just made me sad.
